Philadelphia Public School Notebook-July Member of the Month

Philadelphia Public School Notebook

Philadelphia Public School Notebook, the city's education newspaper, has been PhillyCAM's upstairs neighbor and a PhillyCAM member for the past two years. The Notebook has been around since 1994, providing news and information about Philly schools. Its mission is community education – to support grassroots efforts to bring greater quality and equity to the schools. The Notebook produces a free print newspaper six times per year – the summer edition looks at the city's dropout crisis – and there's fresh news and commentary every weekday online at thenotebook.org.

The Notebook has taken advantage of being located at 699 Ranstead Street. Staff have gotten trained in video production at PhillyCAM, and the Notebook has started producing more multimedia stories, including a powerful, new 30-minute documentary, Glen's Village, about schools, trauma, and the life journey of college junior Glen Casey of West Philadelphia. The Notebook also led a journalism class at PhillyCAM this spring, preparing participants to create a 30-minute TV news broadcast.

The Notebook is reader-supported. Memberships start at $40 and get you a free copy of each edition in the mail. By joining, you're helping make sure solid watchdog journalism about the schools continues at the Notebook.
