February Member Spotlight, Brightness In Black

My name is Kelvin Phillips, and I’m the Program Director for StoryCorps’ Brightness in Black. StoryCorps’ mission is to honor everyday people by recording their stories, and Brightness in Black is our commitment to do that work in Black communities with intention and care, lifting up stories that reflect our joy, our resilience, and the full possibility of who we are.
Brightness in Black is only possible because of the support behind it: Michael Jordan’s Black Community Commitment, the Hearthland Foundation, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and The Stavros Niarchos Foundation. All of us at StoryCorps are grateful for their investment in making this work possible.
And PhillyCAM has been an incredible partner. Since last May, you’ve welcomed Brightness in Black into the community in meaningful ways, from inviting us to share our narrative change methodology at the Producers Retreat, to collaborating with us at PPMFest on a packed-out panel about “free speech with integrity.” That kind of partnership matters, especially now. We are honored to be Member of the Month, and excited to keep building together in 2026 and beyond.
