July Member of the Month, Janiya Henley

My name is Janiya Henley, a proud 2022 graduate of Norfolk State University with a Bachelor of Science in Mass Communications, specializing in General Broadcasting.  Through authentic storytelling, I strive to shine a light on untold narratives, celebrate our shared experiences, and spark conversations that drive progress and transformation. With every project, I hope to inspire, inform, and leave a lasting impact.

I initially joined PhillyCAM in 2022, but it wasn’t until I became an intern in 2023 that I truly found my footing and became immersed in the work. As an intern, I quickly began taking advantage of the many opportunities PhillyCAM offers to grow and learn. I enrolled in several production and media classes, where I gained hands on experience in various aspects of media creation and storytelling.

Over time, I’ve had the chance to wear many hats: director, producer, camera operator, editor, and more. I’ve contributed to studio productions, supported live broadcasts, and even brought my own short films to life with the help of PhillyCAM’s resources and supportive community. Whether I was leading a project or stepping in to lend a hand wherever needed, each role taught me something valuable about collaboration, creativity, and leadership.

What stands out to me the most about PhillyCAM is how it helped me step outside of my comfort zone. PhillyCAM was the first space that pushed me to take initiative, trust my instincts, and really believe in my creative voice. It became more than just a media organization to me, it became a space for self-discovery and empowerment.
