Special memo to PhillyCAM members - 4/22/2021
Dear PhillyCAM Community, almost one year ago, George Floyd lost his life at the hands of the police. This week, after months of countless protests and racial reckonings around the country and the world, a historic verdict was decided — and we want to give you, our members, time to process. As a result, we've decided to push our annual member meeting to next week.
The NEW DATE for the 2021 Annual Member Meeting is Thursday, April 29, 2021 at 6:00 PM. Register here.
If you have not yet voted for the Board Director candidates, you have only until tonight [April 22, 2021 at 8:00 PM EST] to do so and will find the link in your email. Reach us at firstname.lastname@example.org for support.
We are faced with much to grieve and organize to create a just and equitable world. A world that’s safe for Black, Latinx, Indigenous, Asian people. Safe for all gender expressions, sexualities, disabilities, and ages.
Although former Minneapolis police officer, Derek Chauvin, was found guilty on all 3 charges yesterday, we recognize that there is no charge nor sentencing that amounts to justice. This was the conclusion of a single trial in thousands of reported cases over the past 8 years where we’ve been conditioned to brace ourselves for abuses of power and lack of accountability.
We are continuing to process the historical and systematic structures that create traumatic harm for our community members in the midst of current local and national gun violence, and against the backdrop of an ongoing global pandemic on colonized land.
We lift up the names and lives of Daunte Wright, Adam Toledo, Anthony Thompson, and Makiyah Bryant. And we acknowledge the victims of state violence whose stories are misrepresented in the media and the victims whose stories aren’t being covered. Although we are eager to share announcements and reconnect with our PhillyCAM members in real time and space, we are delaying our upcoming Annual Member Meeting until Thursday, April 29, 2021. This is a collective pause to encourage each of us to practice the care and action necessary for mental health and emotional wellness and for dismantling white supremacist ideology in our culture.
