Mt. Airy Home School - June Member of the Month

MAHC Member of the Month - June 2013

Mt. Airy Homeschooling Co-op (MAHC) is 25 families -- about 50 young people -- who meet every Tuesday for classes and socializing. Parents and professional teachers offer fabulous classes that recently included Chemistry, Nature Journaling, Cell Biology, Trash to Fashion, American Sign Language, Skits and Improv, Bootcamp, Journalism, German, Native American History, Crafting a Better Minecrafter, U.S. Geography, Bake Sale for Charity, and Linocut.

Participants take three classes a day and have long breaks to play with friends. Kids will typically play tag or Capture the Flag on our huge lawn, build fairy houses on the edge of the nearby woods, or compete in Magic the Gathering games. Tuesday is the best day of the week!

We also foster community by hosting potluck dinners, laser-tag outings, talent shows, dance parties, camping trips and more throughout the year. We disprove the myth that homeschooled youths are isolated.

MAHC joined PhillyCAM as a group member more than a year ago. Since taking the certification classes, we've offered NINE popular video production classes to 35 of our students! Older youth have enjoyed Stop Motion Animation, Digital Yearbook, Digital Story Slam and more. And our younger kids got involved too by developing an original skit for filming.

We're wrapping up production of a 13-episode variety show for PhillyCAM. It's called Digital Graffiti and it's available on demand. The show features footage of our classes and interviews with teachers interlaced with hilarious skits.

PhillyCAM has meant so much to our community. We've learned all about camera care, video production techniques, story-telling, and the art of editing. Even more important, we've laughed hard, resolved conflict, compromised, and delighted in seeing our work on screen.

We're proud to be PhillyCAM's member of the month!
