PPM Fest: Hometown Music Video Production Workshop

Saturday, October 2, 2021 - 2:00pm to 5:00pm

You are invited to contribute images for a crowdsourced music video being created for the song “My Hometown,” by Mike Strickland, Jr. What does it mean to feel a sense of belonging to the place where you live and how does that belonging shape your identity? Inspired by his roots in Philadelphia, Strickland uses the song to conjure emotions, memories, and the momentum of everyday life─the fractures and struggles along with the care, compassion and resilience to help overcome them. Written during the pandemic “My Hometown” captures a unique moment but is more than that. It is a soulful celebration and a lyrical call to action to think about “what made you what you are today” and build a visual portrait about the enduring role of place in nurturing a collective identity.

This will be a hands-on workshop to invite members of the community to contribute to the music video. We will meet at PhillyCAM and then walk around the city capturing images that respond to prompts in the lyrics.

The Team:
Cindy Burstein is a documentary producer, director, and educator. She brings expertise in community organizing, audience outreach, and impact producing to her filmmaking process. For ten years, as a regional coordinator for ITVS’s (Independent Television Service) Community Cinema Program, she built partnerships to launch monthly screening events for documentary films airing on PBS. From 2015-2017 she was selected as a cultural envoy for the American Film Showcase, to tour her award-winning documentary, ‘Concrete, Steel & Paint’ internationally. Cindy is a recipient of an Independence Foundation Artist Fellowship and a Leeway Foundation Transformation Award—recognizing women artists engaged in social change.

Mike Strickland Jr. is a musician, songwriter, and producer born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His suave, sensual, and intoxicating sounds paint the walls of any venue as a canvas and invite you to become a co-artist in the piece he is creating. Known on stage as BATMAN, most typically with his signature trombone, Mike’s musical abilities are wide-ranging. He has recorded with legendary artists such as The Roots, Pharrell Williams, and Low Cut Connie. Since 2012, Mike has led ‘Philly’s own’ New Sound Brass Band.

This workshop will be held in person at PhillyCAM. Masks required.
