CAIR - December Member Of The Month

A 14-year-old Muslim student once told me that he went to school after the media hysteria following the death of Osama bin Laden, and a classmate said to him sympathetically, “Sorry to hear that your uncle died yesterday”.

It’s sad but true.

Many people tend to rely heavily on television for news and information. When it comes to talking about or portraying Muslims and diversity of the Muslim American experience in mainstream media, quite frankly, it’s negative or inaccurate. We at CAIR-Philadelphia joined PhillyCAM because we believe in the power of community media. We believe that it is up to us to create media that documents our experience, our struggles and our history.

This is our second year as a PhillyCAM organizational member and we’ve recently produced a short documentary to be aired very soon. We look forward to working on future projects, and appreciate the support and concern of PhillyCAM staff and other members.

The Philadelphia Chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Philadelphia) is a civil liberties organization which advocates for legal and social equality for persons who are subjected to unlawful discrimination on the basis of their actual or perceived identity as an American Muslim. CAIR-Philadelphia is also involved in media engagement by assisting journalists covering issues relating to Muslims, monitoring local media and responding to numerous interview requests.

Thanks,
