PhillyCAM Receives Four National Awards For Excellence in Television Programming

PhillyCAM is the proud recipient of four Hometown Media Awards presented by The Foundation of the Alliance for Community Media. The awards recognize excellence in the field of community media, this year received more than 1,000 plus entries in 40 categories were submitted for consideration.

“As such a relatively young community media center, with only eight years into our work, it is a great honor to be recognized as outstanding in our field by many of our peers who have been operating public access television centers for 30 plus years, said PhillyCAM’s Executive Director Gretjen Clausing.  “We are proud to share this achievement with all our incredibly creative and hardworking radio and television producers, board, staff, instructors, and partners.”

The Alliance for Community Media is a membership organization supporting the work of over 2,000 public, educational, government (PEG )Access television stations from around the country.

PhillyCAM's excellence was recognized in the following categories:

The top award in their category of Overall Excellence in Public Access Television for stations with budgets over $1,000,000.  The Overall Excellence awards recognize access organizations for their overall operational activities and programming efforts.

Genealogy Quick Start, produced by Shamele Jordan, was awarded Best Instructional/Training program created by an Independent Producer.  Genealogy Quick Start teaches people how to jump in and start researching your family and uncover your ancestry. Genealogy Quick Start airs Wednesdays at 6:00 pm on PhillyCAM.

 

POPPYN - Presenting Our Perspectives on Philly Youth News produced by the University Collaborative based at Temple University was awarded Best Magazine Shows created by students.  POPPYN is a youth-produced news show about issues and events Philly young people care about. They won for an episode focusing on gentrification. POPPYN airs Thursdays at 5:30 pm on PhillyCAM.

PhillyCAM Voices is a monthly community news magazine produced entirely by volunteer reporters who cover topics from the political, cultural and civic life in Philadelphia.  It was named Best News Program produced by independent producers. Voices airs weekly on Mondays at 6:30 pm on PhillyCAM.

The 2018 winners were presented with their awards at the 2018 Annual Conference’s Hometown Media Awards Celebration on July 12 in Baltimore.
