Jay Scott Smith, Voices Co-Producer

 

We welcome Jay Scott Smith as the new Voices Co-Producer.

Jay Scott Smith an award-winning veteran journalist, broadcaster, and podcaster. He joined KYW Newsradio in February 2019 after he previously spent three years at WHYY, where he won Best Newscast and two Best Sports Feature Awards from the PA Associated Press.

A Detroit native, Jay graduated from Michigan State University in 2003 and later received his Master’s Degree in Journalism from Wayne State University in 2011. He began his radio career in 2005 at WQHH-FM in Lansing, Mich.

In a career that has included stops at the Detroit News, MLive.com, and the Asbury Park Press, Jay joined TheGrio — then a division of NBC News — in 2011. While there he covered major stories in the Midwest including Chicago’s issues with housing discrimination and gun violence as well as Detroit’s historic 2012 bankruptcy.

An experienced sports journalist, he’s covered major events such as the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, the Daytona 500, the NFL Draft, and the World Series.p

Jay also teaches journalism and broadcast editing at Lincoln University. 

He is a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, a member of the National Association of Black Journalists and a past Vice President of Broadcast for the Philadelphia Association of Black Journalists.

In his spare time, he loves baseball, listening to podcasts, classic hip-hop, going to the beach, and watching movies and pro wrestling.
