 Dates/Times: 01/24/2023 06:30 PM - 03/14/2023 08:00 PM ET

This project based workshop will support students in creating a short video to be included in a collage-style Termite TV Show on the theme of Portal. The final show will be presented on PhillyCAM and also exhibited at Cherry Street Pier, as part of Termite TV’s 30th Anniversary show. Termite TV is a collective of video makers who have used the thematic TV show model to create experimental collage-style explorations on a theme. In a jazz like collaboration, producers contribute content from different perspectives and visual styles.

As Termite TV’s  first show produced since the pandemic, Termite is inspired by  Arundhati Roy’s 2020 article, “The Pandemic is a Portal.” Termite has always explored new visual language and approaches to understanding and reflecting on our current political, social and cultural moments. The Pandemic has opened a space for collective reflection on what it means to ‘return to normal’ and push boundaries for resisting and refining what we accept as guiding principles and norms in our lives. This ‘moment,’ which we should now accept as life, calls us to consider the foundations that we build and continue to uphold on personal, daily and global levels. We invite work that steps into this portal of possibility; work that holds a mirror to our reality but allows us a crack to step through it. What does portal mean to you?

“Whatever it is, coronavirus has made the mighty kneel and brought the world to a halt like nothing else could. Our minds are still racing back and forth, longing for a return to “normality”, trying to stitch our future to our past and refusing to acknowledge the rupture. But the rupture exists. And in the midst of this terrible despair, it offers us a chance to rethink the doomsday machine we have built for ourselves.  Nothing could be worse than a return to normality.

Historically, pandemics have forced humans to break with the past and imagine their world anew. This one is no different. It is a portal, a gateway between one world and the next. We can choose to walk through it, dragging the carcasses of our prejudice and hatred, our avarice, our data banks and dead ideas, our dead rivers and smoky skies behind us. Or we can walk through lightly, with little luggage, ready to imagine another world. And ready to fight for it” - A selection from author Arundhati Roy’s forthcoming book Azadi: Freedom. Fascism. Fiction. (Haymarket, September 2020)

There will be an opportunity to receive training on the Grab n Go kit, microphones and lighting if needed to complete the project. Participants should have a basic foundation of videography and editing. Support will be provided in person on designated days throughout production.

Participants will be required to complete a short film as part of the workshop.

Upon completion of the workshop, participants will receive a 1-year membership to PhillyCAM and invitation to contribute to future Termite TV projects.
