Youth Programming at PhillyCAM

Youth have been involved in programming at PhillyCAM since the start!

Through PhillyCAM’s membership in the Philly Youth Media Collaborative we have been able to partner with other member organizations to offer training and production opportunities to young media producers throughout Philadelphia.

In the last year, we have worked closely with YES Philly to assist them in the training and production of the Pushouts project

while this year students have been working independently to produce Pushouts 2

In May of this year, PhillyCAM had the opportunity to work with students through a partnership with People’s Emergency Center to produce the series Young and Educated in the TV Studio:

The Youth Committee (aka Mashed Crew), of PYMC also meet weekly at PhillyCAM to organize and plan youth arts events aimed at connecting young artists under 24 years old, and raising visibility about the diversity of creative talent in Philly.

Also in the Spring, PhillyCAM partnered with PYMC and Philly Tech Week to livestream a series of PTW events throughout the city. PhillyCAM staff trained a youth crew to operate cameras, run the switcher and report live from the field.

This summer we have 6 High School interns working at PhillyCAM for 6 weeks to produce a series of interstitials to be played on the channel and used for outreach to promote the idea of “People Powered Media.” This first cohort of teen interns will help us visualize and pilot activities for future youth media programs at PhillyCAM.

Also, this summer, Art Factory will be returning to PhillyCAM, and partnering with
Decarcerate PA for a six week production course in animation and change-making media. The youth of Art Factory will plan, direct and produce three animated pieces as well as a studio talk that support Decarcerate's platform to:

1. Stop prison expansion,
2. Decarcerate Pennsylvania's current prison population, and
3. Reinvest resources into education and community resources.

The visionary young artists from the Factory, a program of Norris Square Neighborhood Project, will use stop motion, cut out animation, green screens, and other DIY special effects to break down the issues with our education and prison systems, and share their perspective on why we need to Decarcerate PA.

Last year Art Factory produced the documentary Education Apocalypse which can be viewed here:

In the Fall, we hope to continue developing our workshops and program opportunities for youth, so check back on the website, or contact Laura@phillycam.org to get involved.
