Verizon Franchise Renegotiation Update

PhillyCAM ED, Gretjen Clausing with Councilmember Driscoll

PhillyCAM staff, board and producers have been meeting with City Council members for the last few months to discuss the Verizon franchise agreement that expires in February 2024. This agreement ensures that PhillyCAM receives funding for the critical programming we provide to all Philadelphians.

Our meetings have focused on securing funding for PhillyCAM to continue supporting historically marginalized communities with access to equipment, facilities, training, support, and a distribution platform to amplify their voices. To date we have met with Councilmember Driscoll, Councilmember Gauthier, Councilmember Harrity, Councilmember Squilla, Councilmember Vaughn, and Council President Clarke's staff.

We are excited to report that during the City Council budget hearing with the Office of Information Technology, Councilmember Gauthier asked the office about their support for Public, Education & Government Access Channels (PEG). OIT responded to say that PEG channels are essential in the negotiations, and the city will continue to advocate for their funding.

We need to keep the pressure on. PhillyCAM members' advocacy is essential to our success. There are many ways you can be involved, from sending letters to the City Council to joining us at meetings.
