Celebration of Black Writing

Noted journalists, writers and performance artists from across the U.S. join Art Sanctuary, Philadelphia’s leading African-American arts and letters organization devoted to presenting outstanding regional and national talent in the literary, visual and performing arts, for the 28th Annual Celebration of Black Writing Festival.

The Celebration of Black Writing is one of the nation’s longest-running celebrations of contemporary black writing. Robin’s Books’ black history month writing conference, started in 1984, has grown to today’s full-fledged festival held the first weekend of June on Temple’s campus and across the city. This year, PhillyCAM live-streamed the following events:

An "Awkward" Conversation with Issa Rae
Issa Rae, creator of the popular web series, The Mis-Adventures of Awkward Black Girl, is interviewed by noted journalist Penny Wrenn and introduced by Brigitte F. Daniel, Executive Vice President of Wilco Electronic Systems, Inc. (Recorded Thursday, May 31)

Tough Notes: A Healing Call for Creating Exceptional Black Men
On the heels of his successful ‘Words on the Street program’, author Solomon Jones and legendary poet, author, educator, publisher and activist Dr. Haki Madhubuti take part in a candid discussion about black manhood and how it is defined, challenged and shaped for boys. Moderated by Anyabwile Love, professor of African American studies at Temple University. (Recorded Friday, June 1)

Growing from Good to Great: Reading, Writing and Community
Panelists: Malaika Adero, Marita Golden, Dr. Marc Lamont HIll, Haki Madhubuti, Bernice McFadden, and Kevin Powell. Moderator: April Silver
Discussion of how our community can continue to grow as readers and writers. The panelists also take a look at what role established authors, writers and educator should play in closing the gaps in literacy and literature wherever they exist. (Recorded Saturday, June 2)
