Philly Loves Poetry Presents New Voices: Philadelphia’s Emerging Poets

This month we spotlight New Voices: Philadelphia’s Emerging Poets program which features poets under the age of 25.

 

 

Spencer Nitkey (22) is an Educator, Communicator, Writer, Researcher, and Storyteller.
"I have worked for Temple University, a Buddhist monastery, and myself.

Passionate about learning, people, literature, and innovation. I use storytelling, educational, research techniques, and creativity to inspire change and action."

 

Jennifer Nessel (22) is a 2019 graduate from Saint Joseph University and a native to Philadelphia. She has recently received the Best Short Story award from her university's literary magazine, Crimson and Gray.

Through the university's 2017 Summer Scholars Program, Jennifer received funding for a novella entitled, 'The Cage,' through which she explored trauma and story-telling in the age of the 'Me Too' movement.

She is currently a volunteer reader for the online creative nonfiction magazine, Hippocampus and an Assistant Editor for the Pharmacy Times.

 

Matilda Bray (14) offers a superbly unconventional resonant voice among new and emerging poets, her search for meaning and beauty questions the perfectly unpredictable nature of what it means to be coming of age living in America today.

"Matilda's ability to focus on one or two unifying images and mine them metaphorically is extraordinary. Matilda is a brave and gifted poet." - Joanne Leva, founder and executive director of the Montgomery County Poet Laureate Program (MCPL)

Janowitz is a poet. Wife. Dog owner. Philadelphian. Adventurer. Learner. Believer. Part-time political commentator. & music appreciator. She is the author of Home(less) (Moonstone Press) and is a Spencer Nitkeycopywriter at Drexel University. She has her MA from St. Joseph’s University and was the Editor-in-Chief of The Avenue. Her poems have been published in The Avenue, SJU Indie Press, and Cliterature Journal.

There are over 50 organizations that promote poetry in the Philadelphia area. They represent every poetry form, ethnic background, age, gender, and community. This series consists of a panel of guest poets and artists discussing the opportunities which their group or organization provides for poets in Philly as well as the themes that influence them. The program is broadcast live on the first Tuesday of each month. The program is free and open to everyone.
