Community News Apprenticeship Program

 

If you're interested in being part of our Community News team, we encourage you to apply for our 4 month mentorship program. During that time you will work in a small cohort and receive 1-1 support to develop unique stories for PhillyCAM Voice or Atrevete. As part of the program, you commit to producing 4 projects for social media and broadcast over 4 months. You should be committed to developing skills as a community reporter  and professional growth in the area of community journalism and media production.

Community News Reporters

Toya Haynes

Toya Haynes is a music journalist and arts & entertainment reporter covering the local music scene in Philadelphia. Her love for the local arts community began while living in Nashville, TN where she combined her love for local musicianship and charities by producing benefit concerts for local causes. Since then she has moved on to write for the National Museum of African American Music and has provided music and culture commentary for a number of radio shows and podcasts. 

 

Mary Luz Marques

Originally from Peru, Mary is a librarian, social communicator and book critic. She works as a bilingual librarian and coordinator for the Philadelphia Public Library. She is also a member of the board of directors of Acción Colombia and also supports the organizing committee of the Latin American Book Fair in Philadelphia. She writes regulary for the newspaper Impacto. She also collaborates with PhillyCAM and is motivated to tell stories that inspire resilience and transformation. Mary is an avid reader and a hardened traveler. She loves photography and cycling outdoors with her husband and friends.

Connie Komm

Connie Komm has been a member of PhillyCAM since 2012 where she has participated in the  Solutions Journalism and Trudy Haynes Fellowships, crewed on numerous member productions and received recognition as a Cammy award nominee. Connie has participated in the 24 hr Film Festival and worked as a crew member for Democracy Now’s coverage of the 2016 Democratic National Convention. She’s produced content for the Black Professional News and State Representatives. She graduated from Boston University’s School of Communications, majoring in Film and Television and currently works as an IT Technical Support Specialist.

Leticia Roa Nixon

Leticia Roa Nixon was born and raised in Mexico City. She has a BS in Communication from Universidad Iberoamericana. After she moved to Philadelphia, her community news reporting endeavors about the Latinx community took off in 1992. Leticia has been a producer of PhillyCAM Atrévete bilingual program since 2016. She enjoys covering stories about art and culture, projects of community members, as well as social justice for undocumented immigrants.

Patricia  Peregrino

Patricia Peregrino is from Mexico City, she studied Journalism and  Communications at University of Higher Studies -Acatlán, (UNAM). She resides in New Jersey and currently works as director of music programming and radio host at La Unika 1680 am. Patricia is also a master of ceremonies (an MC) and has been invited to lead festivals and sporting events. Patricia has been working in the radio media for more than fifteen years as an announcer, she was on La Super 1360 am, La Mega 1310 am and made reports for the Actualidad Informativa TV program.

 Shanayah Wyche

Shanayah Wyche is a community journalist and public relations specialist who has prioritized working with education and service-based initiatives for the past 8 years. Currently the Urban Technology Project's Alumni Engagement and Development VISTA, Shanayah's core professional purpose is to place the betterment of Philadelphia at the forefront of her efforts. In the past Shanayah has worked for iHeartMedia, the City of Philadelphia's Department of Public Health, and Movement Alliance Project.
